This morning, I got to check out the progress of the congestion-busting and job-creating extension of Stephenson Avenue.

Extending Stephenson Avenue will ease congestion on local roads like Scarborough Beach Road, Cedric Street and Ellen Stirling Boulevard and create more local jobs.

This is an important election commitment of the McGowan Labor Government that will be delivered in two phases.

Phase 1 is being delivered by the City of Stirling and involves works to extend Stephenson Ave in Innaloo and will deliver two lanes in each direction with traffic signalised intersections, new local road connections to Ellen Stirling Boulevard via Oswald Street and Howe Street, on-street parking, and a new Shared Path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Phase 2 will be delivered by Main Roads and will include construction of the new Stephenson Ave bridge over the Mitchell Freeway and Joondalup Railway, with new on and off freeway ramps, new access to Stirling Station car park with an upgrade to the Stirling Bus Interchange to provide an additional 12 bus stands, and new Principal Shared Path for pedestrians and cyclists on the east side of Mitchell Freeway from Telford Crescent to Civic Place with an underpass at Stephenson Ave.

This massive project will create over 800 jobs during construction and enable the development of the Stirling City Centre, allowing for thousands of jobs to be created locally.

Once complete, the project will complement other infrastructure investments in the local area, such as the widening of the Mitchell Freeway and principal shared paths, which all ease congestion and allow motorists to spend less time in traffic.
