13 March 2020

The State Government has set aside $3 million for a major upgrade to improve safety and traffic flow at the Main Street, Green Street and Scarborough Beach Road intersection.

This is a tough intersection, so it is important that we get it right.

Further design work is being completed based on a roundabout style design. All options are being assessed with a complex range of considerations including traffic flow, safety, budget, underground services, and maintaining bus access.

An interim improvement will be implemented while the roundabout design is further progressed, safety modelling completed and community consultation undertaken. This interim improvement is designed to reduce last minute lane changes and to improve signage and street markings, and includes the following changes.

1) Street markings that direct motorists heading east into Green Street via two traffic lanes and limits Scarborough Beach Road to one lane to eliminate motorists becoming trapped into heading southbound on Scarborough Beach Road and attempting last minute lane changes;

2) Providing a clear delineation of lanes within the median of Scarborough Beach Road through improved street markings; and

3) Introducing stop signs on the median at the Green Street and Scarborough Beach Road intersection.

The interim improvement will not be the final upgrade, but it is action we can take now to make the intersection safer and easier to navigate, while also helping traffic to flow better. Click here for the plans for the interim improvement which includes improved street markings and signage.

When the design is progressed further I will organise a community meeting for Main Roads to present it. If you would like to attend, please email [email protected] to register your interest.

UPDATE: Interim works on the intersection have now been completed. Plans for the intersection upgrade have now been released and are available here.
